Hay prices have increased from $6/bale a few short years ago to an incredible $13.75/bale this winter, with the last increase of $1/bale occurring over a 1 month period.
2 major economic factors have created this chain of price increases: the exorbitant cost of fuel means the farmers spend a lot more money to run their tractors as well as increasing the cost to transport the hay from the field to the market. Another factor is that with the advent of corn-based fuel, farmers are replacing their hay fields with corn fields. Yes, they are now growing corn in Southeast Arizona! This decreases the availability of hay, which in turn drives the cost up. Incredibly, this also increases the price of corn-based livestock feed as most corn is sold to the fuel refineries and not to the feed mills.
Many of our friends are being forced out of the agriculture business; the small farmer can in no way compete with corporate agri-business prices with these increases in fuel and feed expenses.
